Yacht Jobs With No Experience
Yes, it is possible to get a yacht job with no previous yachting experience — almost everyone currently working on yachts started this way. What gets a first job is not a sea-going CV; it is the right paperwork (STCW and ENG1), the right attitude, and being in the right place at the right time.
Get the paperwork sorted first
An STCW basic safety training certificate and an ENG1 medical certificate are the two documents almost every yacht expects before they will even consider a new starter, experienced or not. Having both arranged before you arrive signals that you are serious and ready to start immediately, which matters when a boat needs someone today.
Entry points that do not require sea time
Deck and interior are the two departments that most commonly take on crew with zero yachting background, since the core skills (keeping a boat clean, working as part of a team, following instructions under pressure) transfer from land-based hospitality, retail or physical work. Engineering and galley roles generally expect some relevant qualification or experience first.
What actually gets you hired
Presentation, punctuality and a willingness to do the unglamorous jobs without complaint matter more at this stage than anything on paper. Captains hiring green crew are betting on attitude, because the technical side can be taught once someone is on board. Day work and dock walking is how most first jobs are actually found.
Once you have a season or two behind you, see the salary guide and the role pages for where experience typically takes you next.
